I need a new AV program, I have NAV2K3 and it is a freaking hog.
what would you recomend???

I would like to bump up this thread with the same question.

I need a new antivirus program that works in win98.

I had AVG...but it failed to find a virus on my other system so I figured it wasnt worth a crap. So I was gonna try McAfee enterprise7 (which is installed on my other systems, all win2k) but it wouldnt load for anything other than nt, 2k, xp, server2003. So here I am, looking for a quality antivirus for a win98 box. Any other suggestions?

All AV apps have their pros and cons.

NAV is the most user friendly for a computer novice, but by far is the worst resource hog (if you have a copy of NAV 2002 use that - that was the last golden version, all later versions are crap).

I like AVG, and you can't beat the price (FREE!). Moreover, it's by far got the smallest memory foorprint and it's not much of a resource hog at all. Major con is that it only updates on a schedule but if you're on broadband and you leave your system on all the time that's no big deal.

McAfee seems to catch more obscure stuff (for instance it catches the IE URL phishing spoof even though this isn't a virus).

I just switched back from AVG to NAV2003. I like NAV2003 much better.

im a nav 2k3 fan. avg never finds everything on my rigs. mcafee I just cant stand. Where's this Super MS AV? i cant wait. LOL

Not sure how good they all are, but I have used avast and it seemed ok.

I use NOD32, uses very very little memory, scans files on read write etc. And also watches for internet bound viruses that you may obtain from internet use/downloads.

IMO its somewhat better than the other one i used to use which had the same type of properties to it, that one was called AntiVir and was free. Either one I would stick to and rely on, but like I said I like NOD32 a lil more.

i run nav2003 and avg - the other day avg caught a trojan imbedded in a download that nav had missed...

I have been using Avast on all my machines and and have been using it to clean viri off many of my client's machine. Works like a champ. Removed 80 viri from a client's pc this evening.

Has many included features that AVG does not. The ability to automatically do a boot-time scan (no sharing violations), E-mail protection that works, and also the following:

"VRDB

VRDB stands for "Virus Recovery Database"; it was known as "Integrity Database" in previous avast! versions. The aim of VRDB is to help when, despite all the security measures, a virus gets inside the computer and the files are infected. With the help of VRDB, it is possible to repair infected files (return them exactly to their original state). VRBD is announced by an icon with the letter "i" in the system tray (next to the clock). If the icon is animated, the database is being created right now.

VRDB PRINCIPLE

avast! creates an integrity database, i.e. it stores information about the actual state of the files, doing it three versions back for each file. The database creation/maintenance is performed either when the computer is idle, or when the screen-saver is running (any screen-saver, not only the avast! one). This database, once it is created, is updated each three weeks (this value may be changed by editing avast4.ini).
If any file is infected by a virus, it is possible to repair it, i.e. turn it to its original state. If there are multiple versions of the file in the database, you can choose which version you want to restore.

I prefer Avast by far. It works fine, and the home version is free.

I use free-av on some systems and it works great.

I have to agree with Nomad, NOD32 is the best when it comes to use of resources. I have used Norton, McAfee, and Panda. It is smooth and clean but costs $30-40. That is worth it to me. I use it in tandem with spyware doctor 3.8.
