Connecting front USB to the mobo?

Post by Demrok »

ok I've got my 2 USB ports onboard, as well as a USB2/3 to connect to a front panel of a case.

I need to hook up the 2 USB ports in the front of the case with the wires. Problem being, there are 4 wires to each individual USB port reading:

USB2

VCC1
DATA-1
DATA+1
GROUND1

USB3

VCC2
DATA-2
DATA+2
GROUND2

Now, on the motherboard itself USB2 has 10 pins, and the same goes for USB3. How in the hell am I supposed to hook these up. There are 8 wires amungst 20 pins. Unless, USB2 can host 2 ports off of it. Which still leaves me with 4 wires to 10 pins. The motherboard manual tells sweet piss all about how to hook them up.

Can anyone help me out please??????

Thanks

That is baffling and mobo manuals are usually very vague about this.

Go here:

Scroll down. ;)

Blah to you Ego! :)
K7SEM I think v.1 not that it really matters though
the other versions just have things like OB Modem and etc but everything on the mobo is the same as the v1
there is a pin config like this
ooooo
ooooo

^ those being the pins

how am I sposed to hook up a cable with 4 pins to something that has 10...

The way you have them written

Post by eGoCeNTRoNiX »

Is the way the go on from left to right.. so VCC1 = pin1 Data-=Pin2 Data+=Pin3 Ground = Pin4 the last pin on both sides is just an Extra ground that some hubs allow for.. ;) GL eGo

I believe each set of 4 pins are for one usb port. For example, on my case I have 2 front usb ports. The wires from them are actually 9, one being an extra ground (I think).

Mine is like this:

So if you only have 4, that is for one usb port.

Also, look closely at those pins or the manual and be sure which is negative, positive, etc.. Be sure the correct pins are hooked up. You want negative on negative, positive on positive and so on. If not on right, you could fry a usb device you connect to it.

Didn't read the post all the way through so dunno if this was answered.

There are only 4 wires for each USB port. Most mobos have 5 pins but one is a redundant ground. Some cases use a 5th wire for the shield, some don't, some only use the 5th wire on one port (the other port gets it from the same connection).

The labeling varied but there's ALWAYS a Data+ Data- Ground and Vcc (voltage) for each USB port. It's important that you get the voltage and ground connected properly or you can short the mobo (I've seen it happen).

The only way I know is to try a less important device first, to be sure.

Though I hooked my digi cam to the front usb port and didn't have it connected right, just didn't work. But I'd play it safe and hook it to the mobo built-in ports till you know the front ones are right. ;)

yeah I don't know what's up with it
couldn't find any bios settings for it and then when I hooked them up like you guys said I lost the use of my onboard USB ports and the front panel ones didn't even work...

I am gonna search ECS but I doubt it'll help, I couldn't find anything in the actual manual...
grrrr

thanks for the help though
