"Sounds and Audio Devices"

Post by darcy »

ok, - i do not know what is going on here now,, i think something's put a pox on me : )
___

i keep the volume on my laptop to just a smidge above mute; things are audible, just soft.
it is still in the same position in task bar.

but today, when i went to close out NotePad without saving the untitled file, it made a very loud beep.
{ prior to today, the beep would always be soft (in keeping with my volume) }

i also noticed when i clicked link to delete all spam while i was in Gmail account, i got the same loud beep { again, this never happened before ).

it may be affecting more things, but so far that's all i've used that's caused the loud beep.

it is annoying me : )

i have looked around CP > Sounds and Audio Devices, but i cannot figure out what to do, or why this is now happening.

there is no loud beep when closing out browser, bw.

thank you !

Are you sure that it's a beep coming from the speakers, or a beep coming from the motherboard's internal speaker (the same speaker that beeps when you boot up)?

If your sound card is disabled for instance, Windows defaults to making a loud beep from the mobo's speaker in place of some of the normal desktop sound effects.

You can turn off the mobo speaker by installing TweakUI: http://download.microsoft.com/download/ ... ySetup.exe
And choose the General tab, and turn off the Beep on Errors option.

HOWEVER the mobo speaker shouldn't be beeping unless you've turned off your sound card. So I'd check to make sure the sound card is working first.

i swear there is a ghost in this lappie, FP; i have just closed out several untitled .txt files again, and it is back to how it used to be. same w/link clicking, - back to normal.

now that you asked, though, it sounded too loud to have come through the speakers.

as to where i would even check to see status of sound card, - i have no clue : ); but i just now had a look in Device Manager and expanded Sound, video, game controllers. all items say "device is working properly".

can you tell me where to look just for the heck of it so i learn something? :)

thank you :)

Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio tab. If there's no sound device selected then Windows uses the mobo beep speaker instead for certain events.

I've been in the same place as you before. Seemed like every single thing on my computer decided to go on the fritz at the same time. Just wanted to give up & get a new one. But I'm a masochist & so fix things instead.
