The economy doesn't suck. The 3rd quarter GDP was a blistering 8.2% {the best showing in nearly 20 years} and the estimate of fourth-quarter economic activity is 4%.
Together, the two numbers add up to "the two best back-to-back quarters we've seen in the economy in a number of years," said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist with PNC Financial Services Group.

That's all and good but until the economic recovery translates into jobs the republicans are going to have a strike against them.
If the jobs don't start to appear before November the democrats may have a chance if they have the right combination on their ticket. If Kerry gets the nod then he'll need a more conservative southern democrat to balance the ticket and attract more voters. Someone like Clark or possibly Edwards. Someone like Dean would be the worst thing he could do, but then I can't think anyone that could balance the equation if Dean's included.
The Bush administration said 2.6 million new jobs will be created this year. In my view that's too optimistic, but I do expect new jobs to be created this year. So the question to be asked is: if new jobs are created, what then will be the excuse to dislike Bush?
