New scholarship created for whites only

A student group at Roger Williams University is offering a new scholarship for which only white students are eligible, a move they say is designed to protest affirmative action.

The application for the $250 award requires an essay on "why you are proud of your white heritage" and a recent picture to "confirm whiteness."

"Evidence of bleaching will disqualify applicants," says the application, issued by the university's College Republicans.

Jason Mattera, 20, who is president of the College Republicans, said the group is parodying minority scholarships.

"We think that if you want to treat someone according to character and how well they achieve academically, then skin color shouldn't really be an option," he said. "Many people think that coming from a white background you're automatically privileged, you're automatically rich and your parents pay full tuition. That's just not the case."

The stunt has angered some at the university, but the administration is staying out of the fray. The school's provost said it is a student group's initiative and is not endorsed by Roger Williams.

Mattera, who is of Puerto Rican descent, is himself a recipient of a $5,000 scholarship open only to a minority group.

"No matter what my ethnicity is, I'm making a statement that scholarships should be given out based on merit and need," Mattera told the Providence Journal.

The scholarship was for $50 until two donors came forward to add $100 each, Mattera said.

I've never been ashamed to be part of the most priveldged gender of the most priveledge race in the most priveledged nation in the world but it's not something that I ever took pride in. The way I look at it is that I had nothing personally to do with it so what's there to be proud of?

was on CNN yesterday.

Anything that helps any underprivleged person, regardless of race, religion or culture, etc. into college.......... I'm all for. If that means a poor white person. So be it.

Having said that, I think scholarships should ONLY go to citizens of the USA. I think we should charge ANY and ALL foreigners DOUBLE to attend universities in the USA.

Just my opinion.

That nice Mr. Dawn, so you have no problem with scholarships for whites? After all if its ok for other groups to have such scholarships, then there should be no problem with this.

Actually I couldn't care less. If you are at the top of your class you are going to get a Scholarship no matter what race you are. Scholarships based on race are for those who do not measure up, whether they be Black, White, Red or Yellow.

Finally someone stands up for the us Whitey, also college entrance is discriminatory, i had friend of mine that was russian/mexican but his last name was russian because of his father. When he applied to the university he applied as a mexican, the college rejected his application stating he checked the unnapropiate box, he was suppose to fill in the caucasian box, he was denied entry.

Latest is donations and pledges totaling up to $4,000.

Its a sad commentary when even the stinking Repubs are PC. State GOP: Scholarship has racist overtones

Don't these other group identity centered scholarships have racist overtones then.
