This is a very long article about the Trump administration and the Dept of Energy. It is pretty unsettling . It is also a fascinating look at what the DOE actually does.
The tl;dr is basically that this is an agency responsible for nuclear weapons/materials safety, integrity of the power infrastructure and lots of other important things. Both the Bush and Obama administration prepared extensive briefing materials for the next administration so that top level people could be brought up to speed on these issues. No one from the Trump administration showed up for a long time. Lots of important jobs are unfilled, but the current administration wanted to know who might have attended climate change meetings. Darpa-e, which funded a lot of research for alternative energy (including Tesla) is on the chopping block.
