Why are some people so big-headed?

Ok, theres this guy that I work with who is all like "I'm a Quake3 GOD!" and tells everybody about how good he is. Well, my good friend at work knows I used to play q3 daily (not anymore) and knew I was pretty good at it so he told him I could kick his ass and the guy said confidently to him that he really doubts it. So my friend comes up to me and tells me about it and the guy from work challenges me. I'm like, "ok, whatever."

We both have cable modems so the lag shouldn't be above 50. I host and I start playing, soon it's 5 and 0 (me having 5) and hes complained of packet loss. I watched his screen and didn't see his ping jump or anything--never saw it rise above 70 to tell the truth.

So then I said he could host so that I could take the lag. Well he said it couldn't for some reason (he doens't know the IP cause he's behind a proxy or somethin'. So, since he can't host so I can take the lag he tells me to put a handicap of 80 on (which means in Q3 that you can't get any more health than 80).

So I do and he gets two kills on me quicklyp--within 30seconds of eachother. I expected it--it takes a minute or so to adjust to not having as much health as before. He tells me to put my handicap up to 90, I'm guessing since he's feeling pretty confident. I say, "no, I'm fine" and keep it there at 80. I then proceed to kill him 4 more times in a row. So the final score is 9 to 2. Thats when he suggests we play CTF. THis doesn't make much sense here. Here we are 1vs.1 and hes complaning of packet-loss and then he wants me to host a game with 3vs.3 (with 4 bots) That'll just make it worse!

It's not like we played for that long, but you guys know how it is when you're playing somebody good. They usually just have a "feel" or do certain "tricks" (Like strafe jumping--I think an absolute must in q3) that gives away that they've played it for a while and know what they are doing and this guy just didn't have it. Sure he was decent, but he wasn't the "god" he said he was.

Why do so many people talk shit? Is it because they've just never played anybody better than themselvse? I know I"m not the best and because of that, I don't go around telling everybody I am! I'm sorry, just had to vent.......hehe Stuff like this ticks me off for some reason......

I have learned that people who brag alot about being good at something usually are not. When someone is quite and confident they usually know what they are doing. Of course there are exceptions but blow hards usually can't keep up with the line of bull they lay down. So did this bragger admit defeat or did he come up with more excuses?

No, he hasn't admitted it. Maybe he was having packet-loss... ...who knows. All I know is I never saw his ping spike while we were playing 1vs.1. Now when I put it on CTF with bots, I saw him have 999 a couple of times. Which I can see since comcast only gives me a 15kb/s upload.

I'd be willing to play him again if he could find just a server so that we'd both have comparable ping. 'Till then...

As you said correctly: Ping or no ping you know when a player is good and when he isn't. I play a lot of Quake 3 (I'm an arcade freak and Q3A is arcae, so I love it...plus it's hard hitting and fast, good fun...anyways...) I play in a Clan and I play competitive Quake. One guy we had was on a modem, he had 250 ping always. Of course he couldn't win, 250 is too much if you're up against quality opposition at 80 ping. Nevertheless we always knew he was a good player. He played with brains, covered the map intelligently, always was ther for armor respawns, megahealths, all that. Knew when to attack and when to run, knew the maps etc..and for strafe jumping, if you don't, that's like playing football without running...

He got cable recentlyu, now plays ping 40 and kicks everybody's ass, lol, one of the very best players in the clan..and nobody is surprised, we always knew he was that good. So co,plaints about ping and packet loss are crap. They can account for you losing to another player of the same skill level if you have twice the ping, but that's it.

You know, you really notie the difference on the public servers. I'm not a great player. I can play ad I can hold my own. I almost excluseviley plpay on our clan server so I know the guys I play with, I get good games..and mostly get my ass kicked, lol

Then sometimes I venture outinto the wilderness...and you you realisewhat a difference there is. All the flippin kiddies, sitting on their daddies computer, 30 ping and complaining about lag and packet loss....give me a break. While I'm out there with 150 ping and have no problems whatsoever..so lame. And whenever a quality player enters the server he wins by about 20 frags. I think there's very few really good players out there on the public servers, most of those who reallyinvest some time into the game are prolly sick of all the lame excuses, the moaning and the flaming. And they play on private servers, like I do. The competition might be stiff, but I'd rather get my ass kicked by a clanmate of mine and have a quality game then spend my time on public servers withh 200 lpbs complaining about their connections. Why don;t you learn to move first before you start moaning..dumbasses...and your challenger sounds exactly like that.

Many people can hold their own out on the public servers, even I can, but that doesn't mean anything cos that's not where the quality players play. So he prolly won a couple of games at Demon UK or something and then thinks he's god...yeah right...can't blame him for thinking it, he prolly doesn't know any better. I still remember coming up against my clan leader for the first time. I thought I could play until then...lol

Damn, look at me go..I think you struck a nerve there somewhere....lol

there are so many people like that that play rainbow6 with me... i hate them when they say they are the best and you are a noob. and then you just rape them and then they make an excuse. like for instance "lag"

The flip side to this is that when you ARE really good and don't make a deal of it, alot of folks assume you cheat. I get this all the time in DoD. Depending on the map, if a timelimit for the map is set at the standard 20-30 mins, I can usually rack up a 100+ score on a regular basis. And yes I have pics to back it up

But back to the point. The last time I was playing was on the map Caen and I had a score near the end of the round of 143 frags for 57 deaths. All without cheating. I do not cheat and hate anyone who does. Yet despite the fact that it was a Punkbuster server, 4 or 5 guys were constantly whining about my aimbot this, or my 'nade spamming that (something I will never understand. If you have them, use them), or my use of a wallhack. It was so bad that one of the admins went into spectator and followed me around for nearly 10 minutes. And even though he told the people there that he didn't see me cheating once, they still whined.

It's these same whiners that turn into the biggest braggarts when they do well. Gives them an ego trip because they aren't whining for a change I guess. Best thing to do is ingore them while at the same time, utterly crushing them into the dust

I had some dude accusing me of aimbotting cos I railed him a few times. I suck at the rail, usually get 25% hit ratio, rather average. I know guys who rail you almost every time. Yet this guy kept whining and whining calling me a cheater...what a dumbass, what if he ever comes up to a real player who can actually use the rail....I tried to explain to him that I was actually crap, it was just that he was absolutely hopeless, lol, he dísconnected...lol...dumbass...

I used to get the "you cheat" line a lot in CS, but I don't get it as much anymore. I used to get it when I played with real weapons (especially scout/deagle) but I play with all the crappy weapons now just to make it interesting. As for accusing people of cheating, that's something I'm guilty of, though I only do it when I can tell someone is cheating. It doesn't often get me anywhere though sometimes people will leave if I don't shut up about it.
Funnily though I don't get nearly as much crap from people when I have my 30+/1 games as when I go 2/1 or 3/1. Maybe because they all just assume I'm cheating and don't bother bringing it up...

The guy that was sayin' all this quit his job so he doesn't work where I work anymore...

...anyways, I used to play a lot of DOD (back when my computer was up) and I was accused of cheating. They think that just because you have quicker reaction times, better hand eye coordination, etc. that you are cheating. Most the people that accuse you of cheating are the ones at the bottom of the team. I've never accused anybody of cheating I don't think--and if I was I was just jokin'. I usually (unless I'm in a pissy mood) try to get their email or something so I can play with them later on down the road. Nothin' wrong with somebody better than me. That means I can learn their ways and thus become a better player myslef.

On a lighter note, there was this guy in my A+ class and he was talkin' about how he's a DooM god, so I was like "alright, lets play" So we got into a game and one of his buddies was already in and playing before I got in, it was around 14 to 1 when I entered. I had to quit cause my mom needed me for something but I ended up in 2nd place ~10 kills behind him. I know I could have cought up (I hung with him a couple times but near the end started droppin') but alteast he was true to his word. So he's cool
