QUake 3 WONT RUN ? Help !

Post by WeekendWarrior »

Hi all I am trying to get Quake 3 running again on this machine. I had it off for a long time now when I try to play it again it wont work.
Its a celeron 900 with 384 megs of ram a maxtor 40 gig 7200 rpm drive a Ricoh 6x4x24 cdrw
Voodoo 3 3000 agp card
SB Live sound
It is dual boot with win me and xp
Quake 3 used to run on this rig with a celeron 450 and win 98 I think?
anyway now Quake 3 only runs for a few minutes most times then it quits to the desktop
It usually works longer in single player but online wont run very long at all.
I have tried different drivers for the voodoo card and am using the hacked win 2k drivers in xp now...same thing happens.
I tried swapping out ram etc...
I have trouble setting the mouse wheel up too it is a Logitech Optical mouse tried it on usb and ps2
I am going crazy here ...any ideas?
I took the cover off and have a gamma 28 blower on the voodoo card thinking it was heat...but ...
Unreal Tourney and AVP2 NHL 2001 etc all run fine....
Any good ideas or tweaks?
thanks alot

Oh yea
The only real differences since it worked last as I can remember is the cpu going to a 900 and installing direct x 8.1
Maybe 8.1 wont work with the voodoo card at all?

I doubt its due to 8.1 as my older C366@550mhz machine has the same video card now and runs XP Pro, completely updated so it should then also have that version of Direct X. I know I'm not solving your problem but that PC runs Q3 fine at 1024x768 res w/o any added fans either.

Make sure you patch Quake 3 to the latest version - v1.30

The V3 is no longer supported and when dealing with hacked drivers you never know what will happen.

In Win98 use the 1.04 drivers. In WinXP you just have to try some of the hacked drivers until you find one that works.

Drivers here: http://voodoofiles.com

It has WIn ME on the other drive
QUake 3 was a fresh install and i updated it right away to the newest and final patch 1.31
I still cant get it to work on either OS.
Last night it worked for a while on one server but not on any others....

have you tried wicked gl? download it and install it, you will surprise what a voodoo card can do with this game driver.
