Any Unreal experts out there? Really need your help, guys.
Running Unreal Gold with a GeForce 3 Ti 200, latest Det 4 drivers (23.11) on Win98 SE, DX 8.1
Getting a weird hitching/freezing problem with Direct3d when moving around (happens every so often for about a second, then everything goes back to normal); also happens sometimes at the opening flyby screen. I have everything turned on in the Unreal.ini file. Turning on precaching doesn't help (seems to make it worse). Here's my current .ini setup:
[D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice]
Translucency=True
VolumetricLighting=True
ShinySurfaces=True
Coronas=True
HighDetailActors=True
UseMipmapping=True
UseTrilinear=True
UseMultitexture=True
UsePageFlipping=True
UsePalettes=True
UseFullscreen=True
UseGammaCorrection=True
DetailTextures=True
Use3dfx=False
UseTripleBuffering=True
UsePrecache=False
dwDeviceId=0
dwVendorId=0
UseVertexFog=False
UseAGPTextures=False
UseVideoMemoryVB=False
UseVSync=False
I've tried fiddling with the settings, turning some things on, other things off, but it happens no matter what I do. I don't get this problem with OpenGL and newer games (like R.T. Castle Wolfenstein), so I'm wondering if it's the drivers in general. I tried using the 21.83 drivers, but the performance is very sub-par compared to the 23.11's. UG doesn't allow OpenGl support, either Could the game be sensitive to my overclocked system (celly 2 566@850)?
Anyone run into this problem, since UG is running on the Unreal Tourney engine? Any suggestions?
Thanks

Unreal is one of these optimized for Glide games, so it will never run that well on non Voodoo cards.
Volumetric Lighting and DetailTextures are the two things that should be turned off if your having trouble getting good framerates
Beyond that, the other options that can affect performance are UseTrilinear, ShinySurfaces, HighDetailActors
