I used to get the same problem. It seemed to have gone away but now sometimes out of nowhere, the entire screen will go blank with textures (I can see the sky but the ground is missing). I just have to hit ESC (to get to the menu) then when I press ESC again to get in the game, it's fine.

I'm using a Radeon 8500.

O geez, dont use the CD drivers that came with the card... Always get the latest, or the latest that are announced as being good.
