Opinions on which is better? I have neither and would like to make an informed decision

Buy 'em both. They are the best games of the last year.

The only minor negative to Far Cry is that it uses checkpoints instead of being able to save the game anytime like you can in HL2, however they plan the checkpoints so well that it's almost never a problem and actually makes the game more enjoyable.

It is a good idea to have a walkthru for Far Cry (several you can download) so if you do have a hard time getting through an area, you have some idea where the checkpoint is. Makes it less aggravating whwn you hit a tough area.

yeah both are good games, but if I had to pick one, it would be HL2

if I knew what I know, and didnt have eithor game. I would get halflife. far cry was and is alot of fun, but halflife is where it is at.

So far I am really injoying HL2. I am very pleased with the way the game looks and runs on my somewhat out-of-date video card (GeForce 4 Ti 4400). I'm sure there will be plenty of articles on how to optimize the game for these older cards. I like the physics engine. Its fun picking up bottle and such and hitting the guards with them.
