Black Mesa Definitive Edition - free Beta for all owners of Black Mesa

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Well they just started revamping again with 'The Definitive' version, which is available as a free beta to anyone who owns the game. This involves a new dynamic lighting system, reworking of a lot of the levels in Black Mesa to bring the models and textures up to the same quality as the Xen chapters, and more.

Looks like it might be fun to play through again.

Black Mesa is $10 on sale. The beta is free to anyone who already owns the game and the entire game will be upgraded to 1.5 when the beta is done.

It's been so many years between the development of the first half of the game and Xen, that the early chapters are just being upgraded with newer tech that was developed for Xen.

To play the latest build, simply right click the game on Steam, click “Properties”, go to the “Betas” tab, and select “public-beta” from the dropdown menu.
It was a 2GB install for me. This will replace your 1.0 release version with the 1.5 beta. You can opt out of the beta to go back to the release version.

It's officially finished. If you have Black Mesa, it's an automatic update. If you switched to the beta, you've been automatically switched back to the main channel and updated to the latest version:

Loving the replay. Very polished game now. They put some loving texture improvements in several places. You really notice it in the laser lab in the Questionable Ethics chapter. There's lots of detail.

Those are full size screen shots if you right-click and open in a new tab.
