wax removal ?

Post by renovation »

anyone have any ideas how the best way to remove candle wax off the top of a speaker box. we had one of those scented candles on top of my floor speakers . someone must of knocked it over the hoildays. so now I need to remove the wax without messing up the speaker case. im lucky its just on the top and didn't drip down the face. its a klipsch F-2 floor speaker like in the picture .

Blow dryer, just keep it moving it should melt the way and you should be able to wipe it off/up. You could also get it melted and then press some saran wrap on it and it might stick to the saran wrap when it dries allowing you to lift it right off the case.. GL!

another wax to get was off cleanly is to freeze it - you might be able to do it with a CO2 cartridge or some liquid nitrogen....

the speaker finish may be too sensitive for this, but the trick for removing wax from carpet/clothing is a layer of paper towels on top of the wax and then a clothes iron (on the lowest setting and now steam, of course). the paper towel soaks up the melted wax.

Scrape as much of it off as possible with a credit card or guitar pick. Then as noted, iron on paper towels or paper grocery bags works pretty good. The laminate should be able to take the heat. However, I'd probably just jump straight to mineral spirits. It's harmless to most every surface I've used it on & will dissolve wax.

credit card worked like a charm ! thanks did it today .then just used the vacuum to get the scrapings .there still a slight discoloration on the plastic cone cover on the top of the speaker but I can live with it . going to have to anyway . :)

Yup, that's what I do with all those used up gift cards. I sharpen one of edge of the credit card with sand paper for those special cases. It's saved my finger nails a world of hurt.
