thanks comcast !

Post by renovation »

its my fault kind of . I guess yesterday Comcast started there scrambling of tv signal . so now every tv has to use a descrambler box again. I just love it how people start texting and calling me because they can't get a picture on there tv's . why ask me -call the cable company .not like Comcast didn't send out letters and emails that they were doing this and what you needed to do to avoid a service problem .hell there supplying the boxes for free. for now anyway im sure they charge you in a year or two.
the Last time I was Talking to myself . I got into such a heated argument . that is why I swore I never talk to that guy again. you know what it worked now no buddy talking to me. :help

They did that last year here. First two basic decoders were supposed to be free, but now they charge us for them.

I'd be happy if they would just run their cable another half-mile to my house so I could get rid of the hillbilly DSL.

Is your driveway that long or would the wire have to go down the street... you could run the cable yourself...

Mainline stops down the road - last time I asked them for service they wanted $7800 to run it 2300 feet. I live very close to the road.

Rent a trencher for a day and buy $300 worth of coaxial cable. Then you're set.

Actually I looked into this for someone once. They make long distance (1 - 2 mile) wireless relays for around $250 each (you'd need two). Offer to split the cost of the Internet service with someone nearby who has Comcast and then setup a relay to your house. Just has to be line of sight. If there's no trees in the way or you can get an antenna mast over the tree line, you're set.

I can look up the hardware I researched for that once.

Thx guys, but no line of site and I'd have to dig through the back yards of about 15 people, which isn't happening around here. Maybe I'll try a twitter campaign - the PR people do follow that - calling or writing is useless since all you ever get is someone who will "look into it"......I had a friend in England who used twitter to get a similar thing done.

so much for that.

Guy called back today and said their cost to bring the line up here would be $12K and I would have to pay about $8k. LOL on that one. Found out the line terminates 2 houses down, but I'd still have to cross a paved county road and no line of sight.

I was hoping this might work.

I hate comcast- wouldnt have them but its the only decent internet here.
They wont upgrade me to the x1 dvr unless I purchase a rediculous bundle including phone service which I dont need- I just want a decent dvr.
If the satelite companies can do it, why cant comcast-greed they own Philadelphia, in fact built a high rise there a couple years ago,

Funny thing is that my father is law worked as an exec for them for 30 years, the last 10 being the vp of qvc. as soon as he retired, he switched to fios- LOL that should say something, and he loved his job.

The additional boxes for other rooms suck ass- overheat- low definition- dont get all the channels- crap make a nice newer tv look like one from the 80's

Make a deal with the guy 2 houses down. Simple line of sight wireless bridge would take you the rest of the way. Could you put up an antenna mast on the roof at each end high enough for line of sight?

You'd need two of these wireless bridges. They're outdoor rated, and good for 10+ miles. Easy to setup from what I've heard.
http://www.amazon.com/NanoBridge-Cost-E ... B0055PKSCK

I researched these for someone who needed a wireless bridge to cross 1 mile. Same deal - he was going to ask someone with access to cable to allow him to subscribe for the service in his own name with his own modem and pay for it himself (he didn't want to share a modem with someone else and worry about bandwidth hogging, or any privacy issues). He was going to pay the guy some kind of rent to leave the modem and the wireless bridge setup there. Never wound up happening. He used cellular wireless for a while and then a year later they offered to run cable to his ranch.

If you end up using them, you'll have to turn the power down. Read the reviews on Amazon - lots of people using them to cross a 1/2 mile but they had to turn down the power because it was hitting them too hard at that short a distance.

One guy says he had no line of sight but the signal went through pine trees without a problem.

Here's the setup manual:

and the firmware manual:

Ha, I have wireless bridges in my house due to brick walls built in 1851. I use them ddwrt so I can get Internet into my bedrooms where wireless adapters were not cutting it. Funny thing, there is an ISP in Montana where I go each year that has 4 big dishes on the mountains surrounding the valley, and the customers have something like the dishes FTP posted on there houses facing the best signal. The Internet is about 2 mb, but it's faster, less latency and cheaper then satelite Internet which is the only other high speed option. It's also a local buisiness, my father enjoys it very much compared to his past Sidney and directtv Internet.
