In the Courts of the Sun - Brian D'Amato

Sci-Fi/Fantasy.

Very interesting and very long ~900pp novel with a plot somewhat similar to Crichton's Timeline. Someone travels to the past, only here the past is Mayan civilization. The level of detail in this book far exceeds Crichton. The plot centers around a young Guatemalan refugee whose mind is sent into the past with a particular priest as a target. Doesn't quite work out that way. A lot of the book deals with playing a particular game called the "Sacrifice Game" which is sort of like the Oriental game of "Go" and is a tool of prophecy. If you like this genre, well worth the time, but it makes you work. There is a sequel "The Sacrifice Game."
