"Odd Apocalypse" by Dean Koontz

Post by FlyingPenguin »

If you've never read any of the Odd Thomas novels, you should start from the beginning. It's a fascinating series. He's a young man who can see and communicate with the dead, and has a psychic talent that always leads him to people who plan on doing great harm, wherein he tries to defeat their purposes.

There are 7 books planned in the series and Odd Apocalypse is number 5. Each subsequent novel has gotten more bizarre and outrageous. This one is REALLY far out. Both this one and the previous book "Brother Odd" had major science fiction aspects, in addition to the supernatural.

Unlike many of Koontz other books, these aren't really horror novels. Scary things happen to Odd, and people may die gruesomely but Koontz doesn't go into the vivid sort of detail that he does in his true horror books. The gore is a lot more tastefully handled in the Odd Thomas series since Odd himself if the narrator, writing about his adventures so someone can read about it after his death, and Odd himself is rather squeamish about gore. Koontz is even tasteful about language since Odd doesn't like bad language. He'll gloss over bad language in his retelling.

I really can't recommend this series enough. You will come to love Odd. He's witty and there's a lot of humor that will make you laugh out loud even when he's in a terrifying situation. Can't wait for the next book coming out in March.
