Redshirts by John Scalzi

Post by FlyingPenguin »

I haven't finished it yet - I'm on chapter 7 - but I'm enjoying the heck out of it. The premise is that the "Red Shirts" (ie: expendable crewmen) on our space fleet's flagship are dying in droves and no one seems to care. Also there's an awful lot of other strange things going on like an Astrogator who, for some bizarre reason, is always included on landing parties and is near-fatally injured once a week, yet somehow always miraculously survives and heals quickly.

It's an homage to classic Star Trek, except that some the Red Shirts are trying to figure out what's happening and try to stop it.

The first four chapters are available as a free book, if you want to try it out first, which is freaking brilliant. They should do this with more books.

A great interview about the book with the author on NPR:

A friend of mine was working on a mini-series called Red Shirts, but gave up on it after seeing Space Janitors and feeling like he missed the boat.

I'm gonna grab this.
