Authors I have enjoyed lately

Post by wvjohn »

Murderbot Diaries - Marth Wells. Sci-Fi These are shortish books and each one is like a slice of good pizza. These are adventure stories told by a security bot - not terminator class, but not shabby - who manages to unhook it's governor and gain free will. 4 stars

She also has other books which I am working through, all good but more fantasy oriented.

Simon Scarrow - Military historical fiction.

Excellent writer - similar to Bernard Cornwell

I have read almost all of the 13 vol roman legion series. 4 Stars for the genre

Now reading vol 2 of the 4 part history of napolean and wellington. Fascinating stuff. He is pretty good historically.

I'm on the 3rd book of John Scalzi's "Old Man's War" series. Amazingly good - especially the first one. Old Man's war was actually his first book he ever wrote, and was nominated for a Hugo Award.

Also just finished re-reading (after 30 years) James P. Hogan's "The Proteus Operation". A wonderful sci-fi classic that World War II aficionados will appreciate. It's 1975 and the Nazis never lost the war. Winston Churchill was never prime minister and England surrendered. The Nazis nuked Russia and conquered everything except north and south america, and we're poised on the brink of nuclear war which we can't win.

So we send a team back in time to 1939 to try to change the past. In the process you learn a heck of a lot about WWII history, and the politics behind it.

I read two of Scalzi's recent ones - about the time/space shoals, interesting but a little uneven

I'm so far behind on my reading this year. I only read Yukito Ayatsuji's Another series:

Another Episode S/0 https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/031 ... UTF8&psc=1

Both are excellent.

I've started Yoshikazu Takeuchi's Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis but am only a few chapters in. Really good so far.

I got a copy of Hogan's "Thrice Upon A Time" that I've been wanting to start already.

"Thrice Upon A Time is a science fiction novel by James P. Hogan, first published in 1980. Unlike most other time travel stories, Thrice Upon A Time considers the ramifications of sending messages into the past and/or receiving messages from the future, rather than the sending of physical objects through time."

Yeah, that's another good Hogan book. Hogan was one of my favorite authors when I was a teenager.

Some other really good Hogan books:

- The entire "Giants" series (5 books)
- Code of the Lifemaker (great first contact book)
- The Two Faces of Tomorrow (very good book about AI)
