A couple questions before a go shopping.

Which would be a better choice ?
1GHZ T-bird or Duron 750 and oc'ing to 1GHZ.
Will I see a big difference in performance from a T-bird and a Duron? Cost doesn't really matter but if I can see the same type of performance from a Duron and save a bit of cash that's great.

Which would be a better choice ?
Abit KT7-Raid or Asus A7V.
Does either of them have something that would beat out the other board and make it the better choice?

Will I see a difference between ATA/100 hd on a ATA/100 mobo compared to an ATA/66 hd on an ATA/66 mobo. I am thinking of a new hd as well.

I was gonna purchase a stick of 256MB Mushkin High Perf REV2 PC133 222 Ram, but some people are telling me that it is overkill....So what would be a good choice, 2 sticks of 128 MB MUSHKIN w/SIEMENS Infineon PC133 or 1 stick of 256MB Mushkin w/ Samsung PC133 ??

Thanks in Advance

duron will be a little slower than a tbird at the same speed. but not enough to justify the cost. Especially when compairing a 750 duron to a 1ghz tbird.

the A7V has my vote for mobo. Not that it's that much better, but I trust asus 100X more than I trust abit. a better safe than sorry type thing.

Ata 100 and 66.... not much of a noticiable differance. Not worth upgrading your drive now, unless you go with a raid config.

The T-Bird will OC to 1200mhz by unlocking it. I chose the the KT7-RAID and 128mb of Mushkins High Perf REV2 PC133 222 Ram but I'll add more (another 128 of the same ram) if I install Win2K as everyone I've talked to says Win2K needs it (now using Win98SE). That ram tests good btw, I just read another report on it yesterday even though the guy seemed to have an "attitude" about it
http://www.tuplay.com/display.asp?s=h&i=36&p=1
I'm going SCSI in a few days as soon as my SCSI adaptor arrives and several people have told me that SCSI made a far more noticable difference in speed than the faster cpu did.
If you want more KT7 or T-Bird related links, forums, etc, let me know as I've found several.

Thanks for the replies. EvilHorace, although you've gotten me pretty tempted to get a T-bird I think I shall go with the much cheaper duron.

I've been happy with Abit since I've used the BH6, BX6, BX6 2.0, BE6, and currently BE6 II. So I'm leaning more toward the KT7-Raid. I've also read that the KT7 bios has a lot of features.

Mushkins High Perf REV2 PC133 222 Ram sounds good and all but cost more than others so I will look around, if nothing else seems good to me then I will go with those. My current PC has one stick of Mushkin 128MB HSDRAM PC133. Should I just stick with this ram and get another stick ?

I seriously wanted an all out PC but I've just run into some problems that I will need money to deal with it. I might not even build a new OC at all. Hopefully I'll still have money for a Duron PC though.

The T-Birds aren't very costly now IMHO but it's your money.
Keep your ram, it's fine (128mb OK for Win98) and although I own the KT7-RAID, in retrospect I don't really need the RAID setup as I'm now going to SCSI and RAID is only good ideally with 2 identical HDDs, not 2 of different sizes like I now have. The KT7-RAID bios is also far more complicated than what I need a mobo for (I'm still playing with the settings trying to get it optimized via Pauls unofficial FAQ:
http://go.to/kt7faq
so unless you really need the RAID drives, either consider the KT7 or ASUS board instead as I should have now looking back.

Thanks for all the advice.

I have already ordered an AMD 1Ghz THunderbird and an Abit KT7 (Non Raid) motherboard.

I'll be sticking with my ram, maybe just add another stick of 128MB of the same kind.
