is there any way to tweak an ethernet card for a little faster speeds?

Nope, you're stuck with the speed of the card.
When you have an old 10Mbit card then there's only one way to speed it up: get a 100Mbit card.

can go Gigabyte. or you can add a second nic. those are about your only options to increase speed...assuming you are using full duples 100.

well....there is one 10/100 full duplex nic in each computer, but when I try to transfer files, it seems to only transfer at about 5mb-9mb a sec. And it was pissing me off when I was transfering 10 gig of files.

any tips on how to get it to go the full 10 or 100mb?

Your NIC is 100Mbit and your network transfers at 9-10MByte/s. You should remember that 1Byte = 8bit .... take away some protocol overhead and you come roughly to a divider of 10.
So 100Mbit gives you ~ 10MByte/s transfer speed, that is what you get.

The theoretical max speed for 100Mbit including protocol overhead is slightly above 11MByte/s.

Been a while since I played with this, but.... DocSilly was correct on transmission rates regarding actual speed. I was going to ask WHY?, but I saw your later mail regarding file transfers.

One of the first things to do is remove autosence in the nic's properies. Dependent on OS, ya get there different ways. Look for advanced properties and select media type. Then choose the full 100base tx duplex...on all machines you have in your lan. Autosensing causes a big deal of problems in copying files, I know as I run an 80 terrabyte data warehouse and am constantly moving files of 100 gig and larger. Also, does your hub, router or switch handle this. I know, but I have to ask.

Also, what is your MTU setting. Win98 runs at 576 if I remember correctly whereas new OS's will jump around. There are some MTU tweaking packages out there. Try downlaod.com, thinkgeek.com davecentral.com You'll find one. It's easier to use these than to try to set it through OS...trust me. The larger the packet size permitted and accepted, the more you can push through. Less packet fragmentation does equate to speed. in the long run.

You running cat 3 or cat 5 cable. Will affect.

From what I remember, he had 2 nics just pluged in to eachother. no hub or anything. Speedguide.net used to have good programs for that stuff also, havent been there to check in a while though.

yeah, both my computers are connected through the nics with a crossover cable
They are NOT connected to the internet or anything, just lanned together

and I am running (yes I know its terrible) windowsME (thats only till I get enough money to buy win2k)

I will have to check out speedguide.net, download, and think geek adn see what I can find

Ding, Ding, Ding... We have a winner. It may not be the slowdown in this case but I have seen it cause a problem more often than not, especially with high end gear. Gotta hard set that stuff.

Hmm....ME Mine is on notebook so may be different in finals.
Right click my network places and choose properties.. Choose your card and click on properites. Go to advanced tab and select duplex mode and select full duplex. Ok and reboot.

Since I am using a cardbus nic on this, somethings may be just a hair different.

And definitely go for the WIN2k for now. I don't trust that farging XP yet. Heck, WIN2k still has some problems. Have never upgraded from ME to WIN2k, so good luck on that. Well of course there is the typical Microcrap built in upgrade enhancer.........FDISK!
