Testing over clocks and general performance

Post by canton_kid »

I am posting this in overclocking because it's not an OS software question.

WHats good and free software to check my system performance before and after over clocking?

I see many people in here metioning things I know nothing about. About all I have is Norton System works 2000. Probably not alot in it for over clocking stats.

Are the programs you guys using expensive, cheap, or hopfully free? Whats the Best, most common low cost or free one, and where might I find it?

I am planning a major project (for me anyway) and would like to see what I have before and after. Also durring so I can see what is working the best and what was not even worthwhile.

I run Win 98SE full verison on all my systems currently.

I plan to build another system real soon. Looking for parts now.

Go to download.com and get the shareware version of SiSoft Sandra. You can also run a search on google.com for programs like HD Tach. Or go to madonion.com and get PCMark2002 and 3DMark2001se. There are a few others which i can't think of but those are the main ones i use to check out system performance.

Thanks,

I got Sandra. Ran it, trying to figure it out.

To begin with it showed my 1700xp as a 1700xp. I changed a setting in my bios to lower vcore and upped the system bus. Just wanted to see what would happen.

Everything still says 1.7 volts to the CPU even though I lower the bios setting to 1.5 then down to 1.25, I geuss it won't go down or there is a jumper some where.

Anyway, My 1700xp now shows to be a 1900xp! Don't know if anything other than the name has actually changed yet though, but in several programs it reads as a 1900xp now.

How do you capture the screenshots to post them?

I use both Sandra and FreshDiagnose. FreshDiagnose is free ware from http://www.freshdevices.com/

That way you get two benchmarks from 2 different programs.. Each one has its own quirks. I used Sandra on my dual PIII 1ghz Xeon box and it said it was a dog. Ran FreshDiagnose and it showed I had a killer. Ran both on old PIII 500 mhz and just the opposite, Sandra said it was comparable to others of its ilk while FreshDiagnose thought it was wasted.

Haven't used the other 2 since last year. Will try again. madonion if I remember coorectly.

I'm not really an overclocker yet, but working at it.

Sandra showed I had a 1700xp to begin with, I DO. Then after player with cmos, Sandra shows I have an 1900xp.

My MIPS 4343
pentium 4 2gig mips 3688

My Mflops 2172
Pentium 4 2gig shows Mflops 1040/2440

The sandra I downloaded only shows camparison up to 1800xp in the chart, I beat that a bit.
I'm running 2x143 for Front side bus. Is that OK? I should be running stock volts, tried to turn them down, but everything still reads 1.7volts. Maybe my bios won't let me set lower. Haven't tried higher yet.

Crank that 1700+ up to 1.85v's and 11 mult 151 FSB for XP2000+ speeds... Thats what mine is at right now and rock solid. I've had it tup to 1733 XP 2100+ but it wasn't quit stable enough there random lockups every couple of hours... I figured 1.66 Gig was plenty fast enough... If you lower your voltage you looking for instability... With overclocking u need to up the voltage by a tenth or 2 to get them stable at higher speeds.

Thanks.
I will try that when I get my new heat sink and fan. Right now have temp problems! That's why I was going to try lowering volts, see if it reduced heat?

I was runing high 60C's and now have it lowerd to a fairly stable 53c temp. I moved the case, took off the side cover, and changed the FSB. System is more stable now and running about 15c cooler! I am using the onboard senser and Winbond to check temps, After removing the case side I looked in and the sink still seems attached fine and the fan is running. I used the pad that was on the sink and I did take the paper off the bottem of it. Got Artic Silver comming in the order with the new sink.

Don't know why my temps have been so far out of line, but I will do alot of looking and testing when I get the new stuff!

2x143 fsb AMD 1900+ at 1.57Ghz is what sandra tells me right now on my 1700+.

I geuss thats more than I am supposed to have, so I'll be happy and twiddle my thumbs till my package arrives!

Not doing any high speed stuff now anyway, just surfing at less than 56k! :(

Any way to overclock these darned rural phone lines and Isp's????

I'm so far out I get every thing UPS or Fedex AIR, They toss it out as they fly over!!

Just joking,

P.s.
How do you LAP a sink? What do you use? I have some plumbers cloth, emery cloth, and 180 grit sand paper? Might still have 400 and 1200 wetdry paper from the auto painting days around here too.

What to use?
