That's what my cpu is running at and that's its temp. Is that too hot for it?

If that's after playing something like Q3, that's OK but if it's that hot at idle, then it'd be too hot.
My cpu goes to 45C after playing Q3 (seen right after I quit Q3) and I've read that that's OK.

That temperature, although a bit high, is within AMD's specs. What type of cpu cooler are you using
Raymond?
These are the best t-bird/duron coolers: Globalwin's FOP38, Alpha's PEP66t, Alpha's PAL6035 and Thermaltake's Super Orb.

That's a p3 though, don't they run cooler than a tbird/duron by nature?

Danielm7. For some reason I thought it was an tbird being talk about.
Raymond thats hot for a Pentium III. The PIII does run cooler than a tbird/duron. On my PIII600e@800 under load with a modified Alpha Pep66t cooler the top temperature is 26C. My suggestion is you get a better cooler like an Alpha or Globalwin FOP38. Also have good case cooling to blow cool air in and suck hot air out if you haven't done so already.

Yea, I'm using an Alpha 6035...
Am I doing something wrong here? I only put paste on the core, not between the copper shim...

may sound like a daft question but with the shim in between the cpu core and heatsink is there sufficient contact being made ?
what im getting at is the shim a tad bit too big and stopping full contact cpu to heatsink ?
i know my 600@858 with the core bumped to 1.75v mine runs around 26 desktop and around 35 after a good waxing session in Q3!

I put the paste on the core not the copper shim. My suggestion you reapply the paste since sometimes it can be applied too thick leading to high temperatures like that.
My PIII600e@800 is using a voltage of 1.75V.

Gazza, I'm sure the shim isn't too big because I was able to twist and turn the contact between the cpu core and the heatsink to push out any possible air bubbles left in the paste...
And sbp, well, I just said it... I pushed the heatsink and the core together and twisted them to make sure excess air bubbles and paste would be pushed to the side...
I'll reapply again and I'll see...

Raymond does the alpha come with a pretty decent fan ?
is it blowing on the heatsink or extracting air away from the heatsink ?

My p3 700@933 stays between 90-100F 24/7 at 1.75v. But I keep seti running all the time. I have no problems with mine. I tend to think its better to keep everything at a constant temp. Sorry I'm no good with the Celsius conversion.
BTW cooling is provided by an alpha pep66 with delta fan and 5 other case fans.

What are your case temps? I had a simular problem until I got a case with good air circulation. With the old case CPU temps were in low 40's now with new case they are in mid 30's all temps are under a full loadd.

My case temps avg. 75-80F. Not sure if you were asking me or not.

Well Gazza you can choose what 60mm fan the Alpha comes with like a Sunon 23.5CFM fan. I chose a YSTech 27CFM. I can hear that Delta fan up here in Md blade_146. ;P
100F = 37.8C
90F = 32.2C
80F = 26.7C
75F = 23.9C
