I broke a friend's Gorb while installing a new hard drive yesterday. I was tidying up his case when a power cable struck the fan and broke two of the blades :(

Being the resourceful person I am, I ripped the broken fan out, cut the guards off of a fan from a cheap celeron hsf, and stuck it in the golden orb. Low and behold the cpu runs 4 degrees cooler! I couldn't believe it. I'll post picks of it soon :)

nice mistake! i wish all my mistakes would turn out that good ;) . by the way, do they happen to sell replacement fans for a Gorb? i think my Gorb is very loud, and wanted to find a quieter fan. and if they do sell such fans, i wonder if i could find a quieter and more powerful one. or am i asking too much?

does the replacement fan you used have any stickers on it to indicate what brand it is? i have a Gorb, and rather than having to buy an alpha or taisol or something, i think i would like to try a different fan on my Gorb. what the replacement fan work better than the one that comes on the Gorb? does it have more fan blades? are the blades thicker? does it spin faster than the original? ooh, and most important, is it louder than the original fan on the Gorb? i think my Gorb is really loud, and i was looking for a fan that would cool better and make less noise, but i would imagine you have to sacrifice one for the other, and vice versa.

Okay here's the pictures. Sorry it took so long.

This is the generic celeron fan. The fan is a "Top Motor"

This is the fan cut out of it's gaurd wall, and the final product:

I managed to wedge this one in using just the gorb screws and the little brace pieces that attached to the old gaurd wall, but you may need to use epoxy.

This is the naked gorb, and the origional cheap, noisy, inefficient, sorry excuse for a fan:

How did gorbs ever become popular? I personally think they stink royally.

Addition:

Sorry I forgot to answer your questions Sunny129. The new fan has the same number of fins, but with slightly more surface area. The fins have a lower pitch (blade angle), which I believe is what causes the noise on the normal gorb fan. I don't remember what the gorbs rpm used to be, but the Top Moter fan is running at ~3350 Rpm. Finally, the new cpu fan is almost completely silent.

thanks for all the info Bitslap. the replacement fan seems a bit less in diameter than the original Gorb fan, and also spins slower (standard Gorb fan is rated @ 4800 rpm, but mine runs at about 5200 rpm). at any rate, even though one would think that, with these deceiving measurements, the Top Motor fan wouldnt perform as well as the standard Gorb fan, but i will have to look for this "Top Motor" fan and try it out. i would imagine that the generic celeron fan/heatsink combo is not expensive, but rather hard to find. if you know of a place i can get one, let me know...thanks bitslap.

Naw. You should be able to find a cheap HSF at your local computer store for really cheap.

I'm thinking of extending this idea by mounting dual fans, or a big fan out side that funnels air into the gorb. (I bought the gorb from my friend, so I can abuse it severely!!!)

I have this weird idea in my head of a complete cooling system with PVC pipe, and a BIG fan or heat pump in my closet. One blower of the pipe would fit really nicely into the gorb. It would still be simpler than water cooling.

Hehe. I'm currently using an fop-32.

I just like goofing around (in every sense of the word).
