I got me an A64 combo , now what ?

Post by nitro237 »

I just traded for a A64 3200 Venice with a Chaintech VNF4/Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra mobo . I see everybody is OC'ing them like crazy . I get to looking at how they do it and man , I feel like a total noob to computers . I understand multipliers , FSB , but that's about it . I don't understand HTT and LL and that mumbo jumbo stuffs .

What happen to the good old days of cranking up the FSB or changing the multipliers ? I even understood the pencil trick :D

Anybody know of an easy guide ? (aka OC'ing guide for total dipsticks :o )

I never really found any easy guides, I just muddled my way through it. Your HTT has a multi of 1-5 (Maybe even some .5 multis) and when you go over 200FSB you should set that to 4 or 4.5 (I'd stick with whole numbers) then as long as your FSBx4 = no more than 1000 you should be ok. :) Once your FSBx4 is more than 1000 drop the HTT multi to 3 and so on. :) Call me if you need more help..

The HTT if im not mistaken, is the determining factor in the pci bus speed and mem timings. I had major issues overclocking my asus till I reallized I could run my HTT over 1000 as long as I set the "max mem" clock speed to "ddr 333". It declocked the mem so fsb could be raised and keep the mem speed in a stable range. I was able to keep good timings and run my fsb over 280 with an HTT of 4. Ended up with somwhere around, ddr435 and 465(been a while), with tight timings, depending on the cpu fsb of course. HTT=general system clock. Whats nice is the locked sata ports and locked pci-e bus features. Eliminates all the road blocks.

I'm in a similar boat with a socket 754. Waiting on a cooler from thermaltake and maybe a case from antec. Nothing so far. If nothing soon I'll go ahead in another case here and use a venus 12 for cooling.

What cooling you using Phil? I wanted the xp90 but it was sold out, and haven't heard back from thermalright. So I got the venus 12 on sale. It's a good cooler and I like the fan controllers.

As you I have no idear how to o/c a amd 64. Reckon we'll learn soon enough eh. :d

I am using ZALMAN CNPS7000B-CU 92mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan/Heatsink - Retail .

I got pretty lucky . I traded for Venice 3200 , mobo , and hs/fan . The only thing I am having to buy is the PCI-E video card . I spent $95 for a refurb X700 at Newegg .

I'd use that Antec over that x connect Mike. I know they look cool but they are made by powmax. Not the best psu maker. It's power output is probably closer to 350w and I doubt a powerful amd 64 setup would be as stable. Plus powmax psu's have been known to last about a year, then usually blow up. Sounds like a shotgun going off. I've had 2 do that (non-xconnect). Or maybe they have improved since I last had one.

Everything else looks cool. :chug :yo

Can't wait to get it set up. Heard these amd 64 setups are much faster than the barton line. My mobo is only nforce 3, not nforce 4.

One thing I keep forgetting, and don't remember seeing. Do we need to have a fresh install when going to amd 64? I had my system in a nforce 2 mobo but it bugged out so I placed everything on a cheapy dfi kt600 mobo, and all went well. Can't o/c in it though. Just had to install the different drivers and a few reboots.

May do a fresh install anyway. But it'd be interesting to know.

thanks :)

blade - as long as you have the mobo chipset drivers, etc., you shouldn't need a fresh install - sp2 picks up most of them - you may just need to install anything left over from the mobo disc or download 'em...and make sure you don't end up with any microsoft default drivers

just got the ram in yesterday for the system - all that im waiting on is a heat sink !
but im looking at modding the sunbeam 20-1 control panel in with my Nemesis Elite Case wiring .so this may slow me down in getting my rig up and running all the leds and cable modding im looking at doing ! not sure if its worth it in the long run !
