Is the pencil trick a good and adviseable method to unlock a AMD cpu or is there a better, safer, preferred method?
The idea sounds good but almost too good/easy IMHO. Opinions?

Evil this is the best and easiest way to unlock the cpu. Krish is running his duron 600 at almost 1Ghz.

I'll try it but if that fails I can use a rear defroster grid repair kit (auto stores) which would also work like the abobe sites 'method 2'.

i tried the pencil again when i got home - no go - ordered some of that defroster window stuff too
- if i can find a decent magnifier i'll try that and then razor off the excess -
I couldn't either

I feel much better now because I couldn't do it either
. I used .5mm 2h pencil lead BUT I had no idea how frickin' small that area really is after looking at the blown up pics before. I tryed but neither my dexterity nor my eyes are THAT good anymore (I guess?) and it won't boot at 11 or 12Xs at all.
I too am going to try the defroster grid paint applied with the head of a pin. I can't even imagine trying to solder that, no way.

got it done with the defroster paint but be real careful, hehe, that stuff is very hard to work with. i put a little on a paper plate and then dipped the end of a pin in it. i was able to clean up ok using another pin. make sure you have a good magnifying glass

Good now at 1200 mhz after adding another .05v core voltage
(almost forgot about that)
I too used the same method with a thread needle from the wife, then scratched off any excess with it between the 2 middle bridges as that stuff will flow a bit.
BTW, if anyone's thinking of this, today at work I checked the resistance of both a 1/4" #2 pencil line (thick lead, many times over) vs the same distance using the defroster grid paint with my fluke meter. Pencil lead measured about 380K ohms (alot of resistance, poor conductor IMHO) vs about 3 ohms with the defroster paint (much better but not as good as solder). I wouldn't advise even trying it with pencil lead.
Another tip: either Walgreens or a hardware store (like mine) sells cheap magnifying reading glasses for about $3(assuming you don't use glasses?). They help alot. I used a #3 which was maximun magnification that I found there.
