Asus A8N-E with opteron 165 problem with overclock

Got new mb and cpu and tried the cpu in my other MSI Neo2 mb and it went to 270 x 9 with retail hs and fan so into the asus it went when it arrived. Initially it also went to 270 x 9 with retail hs and stock settings other than the fsb. My mb has 2 x 512 crucial ballistix, maxtor 10 ide, ati x850xt and xp pro.
When it pass bootup with the beep, load the peripherals then it would freeze just prior to loading windows so I backed off the fsb, upped the voltage and it would keep dropping as to what it would load windows with. I changed the psu to an antec 550w and put an xp120 hs on it but temps are cool.
Finally down to 225 for a fsb it will boot at. My ht is 3 or 4, command time 2t and bios is latest(last november I think).
My 3500+ in the msi goes to 11 x 255 in that machine so I thought I would swap them out and now the opteron is back at 270 on the msi and the 3500+ is down to 225 to get it to load windows on the asus.
Not real familiar with asus and their bios stuff but it must be the mb or the bios settings, anyone?
I was googling problems and started in on the hard drive which took me to the drivers for the NF4 and that took me to the bios page(asus is the worst mb website on the internet) and I did a flash of the bios and my problems seemed to have gone away.
