Over clock a Quad Core or 2X?

Post by canton_kid »

Does anyone over clock anymore? Can it still be done? Is it worth while?

Just thinking if a Quad was overclocked a decent amount like in the old days of XP 1700 and XP 2500 ect... CPUs when so many were over clocking a dcent amount, then it would be a 4X over clock now?

So a .25 gain would be like a 1 on a quad?

The Intel Core 2 duos and quads overclock very well. 50% overclocks are very common.

Here is a Core 2 overclocking database and AMD overclocking guide:

LOL, does anyone overclock anymore? If it weren't for overclocking, Intel wouldn't have made the comeback that it did. I have an E4300 that goes to 3.2ghz (1.8ghz stock), I also have an E5200 that does 3.6ghz (2.5ghz stock). The Q6600's are known for doing 3.2ghz & higher. I can't afford higher end CPUs to play with, but I've heard people getting 4ghz+ on air cooling. 6ghz+ with liquid nitrogen if you're nuts.

OH :s cratch

I hadn't seen so much about overclocking as we used to back in the XP1700 XP2500 days. Thought maybe it was given up.

I'll have to look into it then. I may want to upgrade CPU's soon if prices are getting low enough.
If I do upgrade, might as well see what I can overclock to before I install a new CPU, maybe only need to buy one instead of 2 for these 2 systems :)

Well, I think that it's becoming so common place that it's not such a big issue as once it was. That & the fact that current processors are darn fast without it. Not to say that stock speeds ever were enough for me :)

I read a review the other day of the new 4x phenom II chips which made me start thinking about building a rig - small die, low wattage, huge overclocks on air - then reality grabbed hold of my silly a$$ - I rarely even stretch the 2 ghz core 2 duo in my old dell - it would end up strictly being for benchmarks, etc.
the stock stuff is so fast now that unless you're hard core with multiple monitors playing something on a fiber optic line it just ain't worth the hassle.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's not worth it. When you can get an entire extra gigahertz, you're gonna add many FPS to a game. You're also gonna be encoding video in about 2/3 the time (recording DVDs anyone?). Large zip files go faster, monster battles move smoother (if you have ever used Supreme Commander, you'll know what I mean). All this for free (well, mostly, the stock Intel heatsinks are good for a mild overclock, but I never left stock alone). Also there's that warm & fuzzy feeling that you took something crappy & made it super.

I'd go with Normalicy on this one.
For me more cores and faster would help allot.

I've used that windows task manager to watch my CPUs doing various things.
I get into Carrara doing a 3D image and I max my cores for as long as it takes to finish the render. Normally for me this is a minute (or more) pretty often for test renders on lower settings, then allot higher settings for better quality for the final render and that one takes allot longer to finish.
Maybe 10 minutes or more at good image settings. At my best settings I've used a couple times took over 4 and 6 hours, also it did not look any better to me so I went back to faster settings for most things LOL

I haven't been doing much with DVD's for along time now. I was making my own videos from camcorders, and of course backing up new disks when I'd buy them. Rip out the annoying commercials etc... too.
Also for a long time I was backing up my VHS collection to DVD.
I can really see where CPU speed increase would be nice in all that for me if I get back into it.

I think I will start doing the DVD stuff again. I hate those annoying menus and commercials.
