with an Alpha in place of the stock cooler finally - I changed my CPU speed setting in BIOS - saved it - and...
*BEEP*BEEP* - processor changed or unworkable - see softmenu

tried it twice more - at 866/133 with my retail 733 PIII Coppermine - (Vcore showing 1.68v @ 733) -no results.

well they make it sound easy, and I need some help here - can someone set this straight? I can user define the cpu and voltage - should I try increasing the Vcore ?

disable the thing in the cpu menu that says something like "hold on cpu error"

something about error

thanks, that did clear the *beep*beep* error - the setting on cpu speed error is disabled by default, but I had to confirm it before it would boot.

now, I can't seem to get the multiplier to change. The mult. is 5.5 standard for this CPU. Whenever I change it in softmenu III, it goes back to 5.5 at boot

there has got to be a better explanation for SoftMenu III than this manual somewhere

The multiplier can only be changed on unlocked (hacked) processors. Your only way to overclock is to up the bus speed.
