When you choose to activate by phone, it will ask your location and then it will give you an 800# to call.
If by chance you happened to use the activation crack that was inadvertently posted some time ago, you are screwed. I have a legit WinXP Pro disk but I experimented with it on a fresh install and eventually it said I had to reactivate but yet it would not let me. ;)

MS allows you 3-5 activations on different systems (they only say one, but unofficially they allow at least 2 to appease people with a desktop & a laptop).

Anytime after the 2nd activation it may not allow it via Internet but may prompt you to call instead. All they're trying to do is discourage you by embaressing you, or seeing if you'll admit to a violation of the EULA agreement on the phone which automatically denies you an activation (so don't say you borrowed your firend's CD).

Usually if you explain the situation it's not a problem. People have just said that they're power users and update their hardware every few months and haven't had a problem. MS doesn't grill you. However they do log all activations and if you try to do, oh say 20 in one day on the same key, they'll obviously suspect you're violating the EULA.

Re-activations on the same system if the hardware hasn't radically changed shouldn't be a problem.

Needless to say if you're using a hack or a key you found on the Internet or someone else's key, you probably won't be able to activate it. That's what activation is for - to prevent things like that. You should go out and buy a legal copy or a license (if you have an OEM CD then all you need is an OEM license and they can be purchased online from places like VioSoftware.com).

There is no hack for ANY retail or OEM version of WinXP, no matter what you may have seen or read., or been told by your friends.

There is a Corporate version of WinXP Pro that most IT people have access to and can be found in the usual places online, and there are some Corporate keys for it that do work. The Corporate version can be installed without activation. Those of us in the biz usually install the Corp version on our own systems (even over a legit copy of XP) to avoid the hassles of Activation if we upgrade our hardware.

Needless to say the use of the Corp version without actually paying for a legit license is piracy and this forum does not condone piracy, yada... yada... yada...

Fp,
I just posted something you might find useful over in windows tips and tricks for XP.
Not sure if it works, maybe you've heard the trick one the wpa.dbl file already, your opion is valued :)

It's not intended for piracy, just to avoid uneeded hassles, and of course you have to install and activate XP home in order to have the wpa.dbl file in order to make a backup copy of it for the system.
