Only sure way is to see if the major components (audio, network, wireless, video) have updated drivers (at least Win7 drivers). The video card in particular. From personal experience, laptops aren't supported for crap as far as drivers are concerned unless you have ATI or Nvidia's higher end mobile chips.
There's also a MS Win7 update adviser that checks your PC and tells you if it'll run Win7 or not but that doesn't say if 32 or 64 bit version's OK or not on your PC. To date, there is no Win8 update adviser from MS.
I've searched that topic too, some say 64 bit can run on anything while others say that some PCs are too old for 64 bit.
EVIL: Intel introduced x64 Pentium 4 CPUs around 2005. I assume AMD introduced them around the same time. Why in God's name would you want to install Win8 on a laptop more than 7 years old? There may not even be drivers for it.
If you want to know if your laptop will support x64 then Google the CPU model number. That will tell you if it's an x64 CPU or not.
HOWEVER: There is no point in installing an x64 OS is you have less than 4Gb of RAM.
Well, that's why MS still makes 32 bit versions of Win7, 8....for those who want a newer OS on an older system w/o buying yet another PC. I thought that you once said that if it'll run Win7, it'll run Win8? The Win7 update adviser tells you if it'll run it and what will need new drivers.
Min win8 64 bit requirements according to Toms:

Doesn't say 4GB ram's required.
My '07 Dell Vostro 1000 with 2GB (max) ram running Vista specs:

So....32 or 64 bit?
The point of the article is that, sure techies will be able to manage, but the average joe. Your Mom or Dad... they will be totally lost. And they don't understand the concept of Google. This a dangerous move by Microsoft.
Agreed. That's also why I'm not going to change the OS (XP) on my wifes laptop (same Dell model as the one in our kitchen running Vista) anytime soon. She's use to both but I think she'd be unhappy if if put Win8 on her laptop after seeing the video above.
For younger people who are use to smart phones, Apple devices, etc, I doubt they'll have problems with it but older non techie types, yeah.
