Having a problem with an HP system and a Linksys USB Wireless NIC

Post by FlyingPenguin »

I'm stumped. Damn thing just won't work on this computer. It installs but gets no signal. There's nothing wrong with the wireless NIC - I've installed it on my laptop and it works fine in the same area of the same room.

It's not a weak signal and it's not the unit.

I've done some newsgroup searches but haven't found anything on compatibility problems with certain systems.

I thinks it's an Intel 815 mobo. USB is working fine. No cautions in the Device Manager. When I run the Wireless utility it just indicates it's searching for a Wireless Access Point but it never finds it. While it's searching if you try to reboot the system locks up on shutdown which doesn't seem right (pulling the Wireless NIC eliminates that problem).

I'm getting ready to contact Linksys customer support but not looking forward to it.

Using the latest driver. The other computer in the house is working fine and as I said before this same nic works fine on my laptop.

I've also swapped NICs with the other computer just to double check and it works fine on that one too.

Definately seems to be something about that one specific system that doesn't like it.

Anyone run into this before?

Everything is set the same as the other computers - using the default settings.

Even the scanner doesn't pickup any access points.

is it far away from the gateway?
could be there are too many walls or wiring in between to get a signal

No, it's close (heck I've put the Access Point right next to it for testing).

If I setup my laptop in that room, using the very same wireless nic, I get a great signal.

It's as if the driver is freezing when it searches for an Access Point.
