Can I ghost without another hard drive?

Post by Sean »

I am wondering because DANG I want the internet on my computer!!! But, my dad's like, "A new hard drive for the old computer isn't a priority right now." Well, as a matter of fact, this dell is sooooooooooooooo screwed up that when you start the computer you almost always hit an error of some sort. Not to mention their are programs that think their installed when they aren't. AND it is full of crap that no one uses. AND we need a new version of windows on here!!

So, is it possible, or do I need another hd?

when you say Ghost do you mean as in saving the entire partiton ?
I know you cant save a partition to the partition your Ghosting from (if that makes sense :D )
and why would you want to Ghost something that sounds awfully like a reformat is required ?

Yes.

Yes, that makes sense. I didn't think I could.

The reason I want to make a ghost is because their is sooo much data that needs to be saved. Just in case. I don't wanna re-format because soo much would be lost in the process.

If your HDD has more than one partion on it you can ghost one partion to the other. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me to ghost a trashed install like you discribe. Sounds like you need to get your hand on a burner and back up all the data you wanna save to CD and then reformat.

basically: Yes. We don't have a burner here. Also, this install, is well, 4 years old. And has a lot of information that must be saved. That's why I just wanted to find another hard drive, and ghost it, so I didn't have to find everything, that way, we can just use the other hard drive, and not transfer anything around. (And keep the windows files out of the ghosting.)

sounds like you only need a small drive to save all the data to and then reformat and install something less corruptable like win2k.
