Turning off display?

One of the APM features is to shut the display off after a certain period of time. However, you can tell your computer to go into standby immediately. My question is, is there a program or tweak that will allow me to shut the display off on demand?

The reason why I'm asking is that my laptop (currently running win2k) display remains on if I close the lid, unless I make it go into standby mode. You can't do anything with it in standby mode, such as listen to mp3s.

Just to add, I'm aware that you can use the blank screensaver, but the display is still receiving a signal, and thus draining power.

Yes. You want a nifty little freeware app called Monitor Off: http://users.iafrica.com/d/da/dalen/monoff.htm

Executing it immediately puts your display (not the computer) to sleep.

Ack. It doesn't work. The monitor blinks off and comes back on again. I made absolutely sure I wasn't touching the mouse.
