Hello All, Perhaps this may bring back memories or someone may have an idea or two. I have tried many many times to install 2000 all without success! My current system is a 1.2 TBird on a A7V133 rev 1.04 Bios version 1006.
I start to install the os and all looks well and normal. It goes along perfectly untill it comes to the portion where it says" Now detecting devices such as Keyboard, mouse etc". At this portion of the install there is a progress bar that moves along as it is detecting the devices.
When tis progress bar gets aprox 3/4 of the way completed the screen goes all black and is covered in what appears as backwards coma's???and it just hangs there!
I have tried the install as a upgrade, tried it fresh, tried removing all cards except the video card and still no luck! The real kicker is my prior system was a Athlon 700 on a Epox board and it did the exact thing! Any ideas? Have you ever seen this before? Your opinions would really be appreciated.

Possibly a bad CD drive, IDE cable or scratched disk. Those are my guesses.

Thanks for the reply but I can pretty much rule those out. I tried two different cd's of 2000(originals, not burnt software) I replaced all my cables about a week ago and I tried running the install through my cdrw instead of the cd rom and all with the same results. Frustrating....

let me guess, you have a ati rage pro chipset videocard or somthing along the line?

More specs would certainly help diagnose your prob.

Wll i ve found most win2k install problems are either related to overclocking or overheat or bad ram
Just because you managed to install win98 with your overclocked cpu dosn t mean win2k will know about it
same as ram win98 me can run fine win2k spits the dummy

Good Luck

- DO NOT overclock while installing ANY OS (but especially Win2K or XP). Once it's installed and setup properly you can experiment. Be warned that Win2K is less tolerant of overclocking.

- Pull ALL you cards except the video card while installing the OS. This is a good rule of thumb for ANY OS install. Things are less likely to go wrong with only basic hardware installed. Win2K can have issues with PCI IRQ channel sharing (NOT the same as IRQ conflicts - more info here: http://soldcentralfl.com/quakecoop/glfaq5.htm#5_9)

Once the OS is installed, install ONE CARD AT A TIME until you have all your hardware installed.

- In the motherboard's BIOS menu, make sure that "Assign IRQ to VGA" is enabled and that both "Video BIOS Caching" and "Video Ram Shadow" are disabled. Set "AGP Aperature" to 64.

- Download the latest Win2K drivers for your motherboard and CAREFULLY read the instructions for them. If your mobo has an onboard ATA100 interface you may need to install a driver for it from a floppy right at the beginning of the OS install process (where it asks you to press F6 if you have any SCSI or other controller cards you need to install drivers for).

Hmm Thanks for the tips. I am running my 1.2 @ 1.2. Interesting though as a few guys have mentioned the ATI vid card problem. Yes, I have a ATI 2000 32 mb AGP card. I was leaning towards it being the problem but wasnt sure until a few others mentioned the same or similar problem. Maybe I will simply try another vid card for the installation?

Couldn't hurt - ATI cards are crap except for Radeons. They have all kinds of issues.

Ok, I managed to get 2K going. I installed a cheap card and was right away able to install 2000. Once installed I put my ATI card back in. When I rebooed 2K went goofy and still couldnt detect the ATI. I went to safe mode and was able to install the 2000 drivers for my ATI from there. All is well now. Just have to get used of 2000 now!

I had a client who bought a POS ATI card (Expert 2K I think) as a replacement card in an office computer. You'd think an ATI card would be fine in an office machine, right?

Turns out this client uses a DOS application for accounting. Stupid ATI card would lockup every time you ran the DOS app in a full screen DOS.

Drove me nuts trying to figure it out - you'd think ANY POS card could do a full screen DOS window, right?

I go to ATI's website and check their knowledgebase and sure enough there's a note that days that particular card has problems running a full screen DOS window, but that "Engineering is aware of the problem and it will be addressed in the next driver update"

Ready for kicker? That entry was dated December 1998 and there's been NO driver released since before that date... guess engineering is still working on the problem, eh?

Sheesh... how can ANY reputable manufacturer sell a friggin' video card that can't do something as basic as run a DOS app in a full screen window?

And you guys wonder why I bad-mouth ATI. I have to deal with the damn things at work all the time.

Well ok, your point is well taken and I to am starting to hate ATI as well! Update: I got 2000 loaded and all is running very well. One tiny problem though. At boot up just as it comes to the desktop I get a small error pop up window. The error is: "Could not wait on selected object" ???? I then click on "ok" and it disappears and all is well! As I said it is working great, I dont think this error is causing grief anywhere but I would like to get rid of it! Any ideas, anyone ever seen this error before?

Check out the Event Viewer (control panel/administrative tools/event viewer) and see if there's an error message from the time when you boot up.
It'll most likely show as APPLICATION POPUP, if so, please post some details (message text, event number).

I never did care for ATI video cards until i got this Radeon... I'll never go back to Nvidia again. I was a serious 3dfx fan until they went belly up. Thanks god ATI finally made a video card worth owning.
