Frozen Cursor then Restarts in 5

I am having a problem with my system, when I am surfing i will go to scroll and the mouse freezes, then in exactly 5 seconds the whole system restarts and runs fine until the same thing happens again... I would say it takes about 10 minutes on the net and its does this. I use XP, direct internet connection, tried new mouse, display settings, no standby etc.. any ideas? I am tired of the restarts dozens of times evryday! it did it once while off the net when playing with the media player, and once during a sim game. i am baffled....
