XP machine now errors, reboots shutting down after mouse install

Post by EvilHorace »

I added my corded Logitech optical mouse to my XP machine (normal mouse plug, not the USB plug), loaded its drivers and it works fine BUT I don't use the machine daily so I usually shut it down when not in use. Now......I'll admit that this new problem may not be caused by the mouse install in itself because after installing its drivers, I get this message that there's some new windows related update now available and being busy with something else, I just thought "whatever......" and let it DL and install this update.
Now.....when I shut the PC off (start/shut down) I get a blue error screen, NOT a BSOD but it's there and gone so fast that I can't see what it the error message says. Then, rather than turning off as it use to it'll reboot. The only way I can now turn that PC off is by turning off the power switch on the back.
XP doesn't have scandisk but I've run chkdsk (probably not setup right as it goes quick, DOS, and tells me nothing, screen dissappears) and did a defrag too.

Might anyone here know how to possibly resolve this one or what I could/should check?

Is the machine overclocked? And that is a BSOD trust me! XP isn't as stable as it seems i found out at least. There's an option within control panel that you can change so that when a BSOD happens it sticks... XP gets rid of them and sends operation on as normal... I found that out when overclocking one day i kept gettin' a blue flash and couldn't make anything out... Got into CP and unchecked a few things next time it happend the BSOD stuck. U can get out of them unlike win98 where it was a definate reboot when it happend.

It's OCd. It's a C366@550mhz and that was NEVER an issue when the same PC ran Win98 and Win2K.
Sure, I'll try putting it back to 366mhz just to see if that matters but I'm having my doubts.
Once again..... :mad , I think it's driver related to that mouse as the disc doesn't have XP drivers on board and in device manager the mouse is listed as a "microsoft mouse", not a logitech mouse. There's also no mouse setup screen for configuring its buttons as I get in my other PC when in Win98SE (not yet in Win2K, same dual boot PC but I'm looking into that. The mouse works fine w/o probs in that PC). I then tryed upgrading its driver off the cd but the newest OS drivers there are for Win2K and I can't force it. I'll try looking at Logitechs site for XP drivers, maybe I'll luck out?

The automatic upgrade (now disabled, I hate those) was for "windows" (or whatever) messenger which looks like AOLs. I can't see where that could have caused the problem so I think it's related to the mouse.

Finally......................THAT was IT! Yes!
I went to Logitechs website/support and sure enough, they say old drivers aren't supported for XP BUT they DO have new XP drivers there and sure enough, after loading then in (and their program removes the old drivers too), the damn thing now turns off normally once again. :D
