The subject is pretty self explanatory. I would like for my CD-Rom drive to auto boot/start when I put a software disc in. Right now it doesnt and I'm not sure how to turn it on.

You should have a setting in the BIOS. Set the first boot device to your cd-rom.

Is that regarding bootup (in that case follow MegaVectras advice) or regarding autostart of CDs while windows is running?

Yep, I am referring to autostarting cd's..........not setting cd to boot first in bios.

I am running windows xp.

I usually use TweakUI for this setting. There's actually a new version for Windows XP right here at the bottom of that page.
All you have to do is install it and it should show up under Control panel. I don't have XP, still using 2000, but I find that setting under the "Paranoia" tab of TweakUI.

XP's TweakUI doesn't show up in the control panel, Doc, it's a shortcut in the Programs folder.

In TweakUI for XP you'll find the autoplay settings under My Computer->Autoplay

NOTE: There are SEVERAL ways that autoplay can be disabled, and TweakUI does NOT repair some of them.

Somewhere along the way an app I installed disabled autoplay and it cannot be fixed using TweakUI or any registry trick I'm familiar with. Doesn't bother me - I don't like autoplay, but just want to warn you.

Yea, I always have the opposite problems, I have to turn it off not on

I hate autoplay, put in a game CD and I get that darned install window! Wanna look on a cd for a certian file, and install window pops up! Pop in an audio disk and the WRONG player pops up!
I always forget to hold the shift key, or busy working on something else at the time I put in a disk to use latter!

I geuss it must be good to have though, or MS would not have turned it on by default and now hidden the switch!

It used to be easy to turn on and off in device manager in 98! I geuss they figured they spent that much time making it, people were gonna use it rather they wanted to or not, cause now they hide the off button really well.

What I really like is how long it takes to read dvd and load the player when you insert an non-labeled dvd-r to use windows explorer to see if it's blank

And these crappy Audio CD's with the junk videos! yep everytime I put in that one darned disk the menu and video crap pops up for the extra's I would delete if I could! It doesn't even pop up Musicmatch for that one, it's like win media player junk! And I always forget!
