virus in avicap32.dll

Post by chicklets2040 »

I ended up with 2 viruses which my virus program was able to correct only 1. They were in c\windows\system32\dllcache\avicap32.dll and c\windows\system32\avicap32.dll. My virus program deleted the dllcache virus but refers me to Window Explorer to delete avicap32.dll. However, when I attempt to delete avicap32.dll I am unable to. I use Windows XP home. Someone suggested that i start the computer in safe mode but was unable to do so.

How do I get rid of this stupid virus? I have done another 4 virus scans just to rid myself of this mess.

It doesn't seem to affect much but viruses make me a bit nervous.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

You need to boot in Safe Mode. You can't delete the file while it's loaded into memory.

Press F5 immediately after the motherboard posts. Sometimes it's tricky to time it right. Just keep tapping it after you hear the POST beep.

Did you look up the details for the specific virus you have at your anti-virus app's homepage? AVG, McAfee & NAV all have databases where you can look up the proper removal instructions for any known virus.

Many modern viruses you CAN'T just clean - you have to repair the damage done to the registry, and you always have to erase your System Restore files. There may also be hidden backups of the virus.

A good place to start a search for specific DLLs is Google , just enter the DLL in question and hit the search button.
You will often find the answer on the first results page.
