formatted disk unable to read

I am afraid I am confused BIG TIME.

My granddaughter formatted and saved data from her high school. I understand the school is not using XP. When we try to open files or look at what is on the "A" drive on our XP system it says the floppy is not formatted.

I don't know how to get the info off the floppy for her so that she can work at home. What is going on? Is it because their system is not XP? HELP!

The floppy disk is probably bad. The problem you describe is commonplace when disks are moved from place to place without protection from electromagnetism or the elements. Has your grand-daughter tried the disk at school again since the problem happened at your home? I'm almost certain it won't work there either.

you might want to download and install trial verision of BadCopy Pro for Win XP and see if you can recover some of the data. good luck!

It could also be that the heads of the floppy drives are adjusted slightly differently, that means that one drive can only read floppies it formatted itself but not from other drives ... happens from time to time with those ancient technology floppydrives, I have one at home that has a mis-adjusted read/write head.
Do as Cheway suggested, it would show if it is a bad floppydisk (floppy doesn't work there either) or a mis-adjusted head (floppy works there).

You could also get that error if your floppy driver's heads are dirty. Office Depot sells a floppy drive cleaner.
