Have Threatfire and AVG, you are set

Post by blade »

At least according to the latest maxPC. http://www.threatfire.com/
ThreatFire™ AntiVirus protects when others can't

PCs are under constant attack from viruses, spyware and identity theft. Every day you hear about a new threat to your PC. They're coming faster than ever before, they're getting harder to stop and traditional antivirus products are not able to keep up.

Will your antivirus software catch the latest malware that just came out today? In most cases, no, because it simply does not know how to detect it yet. But ThreatFire's ActiveDefense technology does, and has proven to provide up to 243% more protection when combined with traditional AntiVirus products. See the table below.

It's free but as usual they have a paid version for 14.95. The free one seems just fine and is very easy to use.

I also use kerio and peerguardian.

Best firewall I've used.

Free, but you'll need to set it up as you go. Just a matter of selecting certain apps like firefox, tbird etc.. and "remember this". Piece of cake afterwards.

Kerio Personal Firewall is a small and easy to use system designed for protecting a personal computer against hacker attacks and data leaks. It is based on the ICSA certified technology used in the WinRoute firewall. The firewall itself runs as a background service, using a special low-level driver loaded into the system kernel. This driver is placed at the lowest possible level above the network hardware drivers. Therefore, it has absolute control over all passing packets and is able to ensure complete protection of the system it is installed on

Interesting. Just be aware, like most of these products, it's not very good at cleaning an already infected system. It's purpose it to prevent suspicious behavior (like a trojan or rootkit installation) in the first place, which apparently it scores very good at.

My concern is how much it slows down a 2 year old budget PC. I'll play around with it. Might replace my current recommendation of Windows Defender bundled with AVG.

More I read up on threatfire, the more I like having it.

However I am having one problem that appears will only show if you use a widescreen. Using a 19" for my other systems, threatfire shows all options. My main system is 1360 x 768 and after a scan there should be options what to do with what is found on the lower far right side:

Tried lower reso, fully removing and re-installing it and still missing that one option. I asked about this in the threatfire forum.

btw, that "threat" showing is from alcohol 120%. According to google searches.
