Kibi or Kilo

Post by fogus »

A very simple question: are Firefox download speeds displayed in kibibytes or kilobytes per second?

What about other uses of kilo vs. kibi? How can I tell which is which? Is 1000 for kilo very rare in the comp world?

Never heard the term before reading that article. As far as I know Firefox uses Kilo Bytes per second as do most apps. I doubt kibi was ever widely adopted. There would be a lot of resistance and added confusion. There's enough confusion between Kilo Bytes and kilo bits per second already without introducing more into the quagmire.

It's not a poll question, just google it.

So KB should be assumed to be 1000. Do I have it right?

whats a kibibyte? ive heard of kilobit, and kilobyte but never a kibibyte
as per the math, 8 bits to a byte
so 10 kilobits is 1.2 kilobytes so the max theoretical speed of 56k modems is 7.0 kilobytes per second

bytes are groups of 8 bits that range in number from 0 to 255 in the standard binary layout.
00000000 = 0
00000001 = 1
00000010 = 2
00000011 = 3
00000100 = 4
00000101 = 5
00000110 = 6
00000111 = 7 or 3 jumpers for all you scsi fans.
etc.
