UPDATES GALAORE: Flash, Adobe Reader, Java

Post by FlyingPenguin »

In just the past two weeks Flash has been updated twice (the 2nd time just yesterday), Adobe Reader was just updated yesterday (both version 9 & 10), and Java was updated a couple of weeks ago.

Make sure you have the latest versions:

Adobe Reader 9.4.5
Adobe Reader 10.1.0
Adobe Flash 10.3.181.26 (both Firefox & IE versions)
Java 6 Build 26

Be aware that Java is rapidly becoming a major exploit vector. I would go so far as to not even have Java installed unless you specifically need it (Java is NOT the same as JavaScript). Another way to prevent scripting from executing a malicious Java file is to use NoScript in Firefox to disable scripting on all but trusted sites (which is what I do since I can live without Java - a couple of my games and apps run in Java).

I ran the Microsoft Standalone Security Scanner on my workstation and bench PCs and was surprised that it found several malicious Java apps in the Java cache on both of them. Presumably they didn't do anything since I'm fully patched and am running with NoScript. Probably they're just Java apps that test for unpatched exploits in IE, Java, & Flash, and then inject a trojan if they can find an open exploit.
