Says I'm not running Genuine Windows ???

Post by darcy »

hi everyone :)

Between surgery, and then being in rehab facility for close to a month, I haven't been on my laptop for nearly a month.

I turned laptop on today, and as I was updating AVG, I got the following, telling me I was not running genuine Windows, - wth?

Image

I x-ed it out because I don't click on things I don't know are true,,,

Then I checked to see if my MS Update icon was showing in bottom tray on the right, - and it was not.

Then I clicked on Start, and don't see it listed there, either, along with other items.

Image

When I went to control panel and clicked on windows update, it never reached the MS Update website, just kept twirling to a blank page.

So i'm being told i don't have genuine windows ( which is not true ), and I can't get updates,,,

What the heck is going on? and how do i fix this?

I need this like a hole in the head right now.

btw, i have Win7 Home.

Thank you,,

if you have the sticker with the serial # you can call MS and they will fix it for you.

I can't see your screen shots so I can't tell if this is a legit message or some malware scam. Sounds like things are missing, and that doesn't happen if it's a legit license issue, so you might have malware.

Here's an example of a scamware version:
https://www.pcrisk.com/removal-guides/1 ... nuine-scam

If it looks like a scam, try rebooting then running a Malwarebytes scan : https://www.malwarebytes.com/

As wvjohn said, this sometimes happens legitimately. You call Microsoft and they give you a reset code. 1 (800) 642-7676 is the customer service number I found when googling.

Can you get to the Control Panel -> System window? At the bottom it will tell you if Windows is activated like this:

"Turns out I’m 'woke.' All along, I thought I was just compassionate, kind, and good at history. "

Hi Fp,

I'm on my little tablet right (_will double check later in afternoon after I'm back from Dr appointment) , but I am 95% sure that when I checked there yesterday, it DID show that Windows was activated.

ok, I double-checked; it shows Windows is activated/

I see now that my screenshots are not showing now - where else I can upload pics free so that I post them here?

I'm ready to scream,,,,

I Rebooted after above scan.
The same not running genuine Windows box appeared.

I opened my photo editor to crop/edit screenshots before uploading to host pics.
Photo editor would not get into edit mode.

I did ctrl alt del in attempt to shut program. It wouldn't let me and instead got message on screen saying they to shut down via Start.

That didn't work so I did hard shut down.

Started it up again, and now I named with 2 window messages:

- Software informed (softinfo.exe - fatal error (bug) occurred. Software informed will be termibated. This fatal error is the result of unforeseen work of the program.

2nd window says Microsoft .NET Framework.
I copied the detais in notepad, but that's not helping me here because I'm on tablet. Seems to be only way I can be online.

FP, If you can emailme, I can forward my screenshots to you ,,,?

Ok it seems to be legit. I think the software informer thing is a separate issue and is because Malwarebytes removed part of it, but part of it is still in there trying to run. Once you get the licensing issue fixes, you need to remove softinfo.exe from your startups using msconfig. For now you can just ignore that error.

I would click on the "resolve online" link and just make sure that when it opens the browser you are actually on a website at microsoft.com and not some clever misspelling.

See if the resolve online works. If not, there's a procedure here, although the first step requires that you have a Windows 7 sticker with a Windows key printed on it: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 68c4cd668d

If your PC doesn't have one, let me know. I have some spare keys lying around. I just need to know if it's Win7 Pro or Home to give you the right key.

Hope this helps.

my head is spinning,,,,

ok,, the resolve online link brings me here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... ws-genuine - I don't think that shows me how to validate?

Key: there is a sticker on the underside of my laptop which shows a "product key".
it is 25 characters long.
is that the one I need as opposed to "product ID"?

also, I'm trying to follow this from your link:

Retype the Product Key:

· Click the Start Button on the Desktop

· Select Computer

· Select System Properties on the Taskbar

· At the bottom click Change product key and retype your Product Key

*** I don't see where to retype Product key?? ***

yes on the 25 digit key. At my old office we used to have to call MS for a code many times. It was pretty easy, not sure if the same.

If windows thinks that your key is bad - all the messages - then you need to get a new one from MS to make windoze happy.

At the bottom click "Change product key" and retype your Product Key.
When you click on the "Change Product Key" a dialog box should pop up asking for it.
