Okay, did a little googling. If you don't see the "change product key" link it's because Windows isn't activated (despite the fact that it says it's activated).

You can manually start the change key process by following instructions here. Should work for Win7 as well:

Ok,, think I'm ready to bite the bullet,,,

FP, link you posted says to open an "elevated command prompt".

I don't know how / where to find that.
( I see just the normal "Run..." When I click on Start button ).

ok,,, it is extremely difficult working from tablet trying to look at 3 different wjndows,,, but heregoes:

Tried both options in above link to open elevated command. Didn't work.
Did get user account window box asking if I wanted to run but said publisher unverified, and since pic in link shows that publisher should be from microsoft, I Did not click it.

Right-clicking on com.exe does Not give me Run as Administrator option.

So,, at the moment. I'm looking at a black cmd.exe box where in the black area it shows:

Darcy, if there is a time you are willing to let me in, I am willing to remote in and take a look. Go to Teamviewer.com and download the program. When you run it there is a choice to install, or just run it. You can do the just run it. Then it will have a window with a 9 digit ID code and a password.

I am in EST and will be busy for the next few hours, but around 8:30EST I will be free for an hour if you want me to take a look. Txt me at 404-316-0640 if your interested. Names Yuri

Oh,, thank you, Genom.
I don't know what will be going on here @ my mom's at that hour ( I am also EST ), but will text you either way, ok?
If I can do, should I download and run program beforehand?

You can if you want. If you leave the computer running with Teamviewer open I can hop on whenever. Just PM me the ID and password it gives you.

Not sure why you would be getting an unknown publisher, unless there's more going on here.

It's possible you have a corrupt registry and that caused Windows to become unlicensed AND other issues.

Might be worth trying to run System Restore, if it will let you, and roll it back a few weeks. Or let Genom poke around if you can get Teamviewer installed.

That is a good idea, thank you, FP.

( I just don't understand why this started happening when it did.
My husband was not on my laptop while I was in hosp / rehab,,, ).
Maybe the heavens just decided it was time to mess with me. Again. ,,,

Welp, after some time logged in, here is what I got.

Removed Software Informer as it's just generally garbage.

CCleaner and Malwarebytes are good. Ccleaner cleared out about 8GB total of temp files

Checked activation status from the commandline with cscript \windows\system32\slmgr.vbs /ato and it returned valid from MS

Tried to run windows update and got an error the service was not running. Checked that the service was running manually in services.msc and it was, same as the background downloader.

Manually tried to re-register all the windows update dll's, and ran into a issue. Many are missing, or do not start correctly. From there could not get Windows update to run.

Was just going to restore to a previous version at this point, but system says there are no restore points for C:\ System also says no backups are configured.

Doing a sfc /scannow took a while and I had to disconnect (was 2 hours at this point) so we shall see what darcy posts about that. Hopefully it's able to repair the missing/corrupt dll's, but if not, it's gonna be a search to find good files to replace the bad ones with.
