Epic games can't normally be launched from Steam as non-Steam games. It doesn't work. I like letting my friends in Steam know what I'm playing. Moreover, the Steam controller would not work with SnowRunner unless I ran it through Steam.
The solution is an app called SteamGridDB. It imports your Epic games (or games from other stores like Origin, Blizzard & UPlay) into Steam and sets it up so they launch properly. Once launched from Steam, the Steam controller works and even the Steam overlay, and your friend status announces the game you're playing. I'm using it for SnowRunner and World War Z.

This is a 3rd party app or from Steam?

3rd party. It's vetted and recommended by several gaming sites. Epic games normally don't work through the Steam launcher because launching the game's exe file doesn't automatically launch and log into Epic, and having Epic launcher run in the background doesn't work either.
This creates a script for Steam to launch that takes care of it all. Works fine for World War Z and Snowrunner (the only two Epic games I'm playing), and in the case of Snowrunner, it allows Steam to enable Xbox simulation for the Steam controller as if it was running a Steam game.

Windows Defender hates it.
Had to bypass it and run anyway.

Yeah. That's because the publisher can't afford to pay to have the code signed.
