Has anyone tried this with a Via board ? http://www.viahardware.com/haltcooling.shtm
I tried it on my Dragon Plus and my temp dropped 11ºC idle. Right now I am playing MP3s and surfin' the net at 34ºC, before I was at 45ºC.
Somebody correct me if I am wrong but I beleive all those cooling programs use the Halt command telling the CPU to stop when there is nothing to do which in turn keeps it running cooler when it is not busy. They do nothing for temps when the CPU is under load. Win2K and XP use the same command all ready and therefore the programs are not needed. When I was running Win98 I used Rain with good results too
Wow that is suprising might have to check that out. But my temps with the Alpha 8045 are great. I have had SETI running all day and I am at 37c with it still under a full load
Well I tried it but could not see any difference. The Alpha is keeping my CPU so cool now that I am not going to worry about it. Maybe I did something wrong setting it up but I dont think so. Anyway I have been running under a load all day with SETI and have not gone over 37c so I am happy. If your temps are running even a little high I would give it a try any cooling for free is good.
I use it on my KR7A-RAID and generally I'm at 23C system temp and 28C when surfing. Gaming gets me about 44-45C. Just make sure you tweak the right registers for each particular brand of mobo as they are different from brand to brand.
I don't think it makes any changes in the registry. The second program loads on boot up to hold the changes. So if something doesn't work right, just remove the program. I've had no problems with it on my Dragon Plus.
I used WPCREDIT on my Epox 8KHA+ running Win XP Pro and it caused a continuous rebooting until I went to default cpu speed. Modification of Register 95 didn't make a difference but changing Register 92 lowered the cpu temp significantly (8-9C). Too bad it crashes my system.
