XP2200+ and MBM5

Can MBM5 be set to read from the motherboard temp sensor in the CPU socket rather than the on-chip diode ? (XP2200+)

Yeah if you have the newest version of MBM5 it will read the mobo thermistor instead of the internal XP one. Can't remember which sensor it is. Just play with them. I bet with the mobo sensor your temps will be in the mid 30c's
