Laptop Hardrive problem

Post by Basterb »

Here's the deal.

I jsut sold a laptop to a guy and now he says the hard drive is acting up. He says he can't boot form it half the time. when he tries to read certain sectors such as with scandisk it just starts clicking and hangs up.
Is there some sort of software that is available that can fix this. I have had this problem with a western digital drive and there software was able to fix this (actualy western digital software).

the laptop is an IBM E series 700MHz celeron and the drive is 20 gigs

is it common for the drive jsut to go like it did?
i have shown this laptop to about 8 people and had rebooted it several times. Never have i had any problem with it. now all of a sudden all this.....

any ideas?

Yah, when it's time it just dies, often without warning. Loud clicking and clunking is a BAD THING.

You need to find out who the manufacturer of the drive is and download their disk utility from their web site. It'll tell you for sure and it MIGHT be able to take some corrective action.

Almost any drive utility will tell you who the manufacturer is - if you have an old Maxtor Drive Manager utility floppy lying around or any app that comes with a new drive, boot with it and it'll tell you the make and model of the drive.
