Two sizes 1700 XP?

Post by canton_kid »

Ok, I normally buy OEM cpu's. XP 1700
This time I bought a retail one for the 3 yr warantee. Figure I might get lucky in 2 yrs it'lll frie, they won't make them and I'll get ZR or something new :) Besides, it won't be overclocked so I figure 6 bucks extra for the heatsink fan might have been OK to use.

Anyway, all the OEMs I been buying I think were black chips (die) in the center on a green board. I think, they all have the heastsinks instaled so I can't see them now. I am sure the die was larger also.

This retail XP1700 is a silver die in the center of a brown or golden board and I am sure it is smaller than the oem ones also.

Anyone know what the difference is and which is better?

Here's the thing. I am building a new system. My Iwill xp 333 with oem 1700xp and AX7 is over clocked to XP 2000 and running great. This comes out of the currant case and into the new case with some new parts. My AK35 goes into this case with a 1700xp for the kid. Hers won't be overclocked.

So should I use the OEM on the IWill as set up now, just swap cases, or should I give her the OEM and use the retail on this Iwill? Of course I will keep the AX7 either way and she gets the retail heatsink fan, at least for now.

Normally I buy OEM from TCWO, but this time I bought a retail one and it came from NEWEGG since I was buying other stuff there already and the shipping was free and retail was only about $6 more than oem with sink and fan. TCWO did not have a retail 1700xp either, just OEM ones. On a tight budget at the moment with other stuff I needed and taking the daughter clothes shopping in the bigger city for two days I think you know what I mean!!!! SO I opted to save on the sink/fan and shipping.

SInce the cpu is different, is this good or bad?
Have not tried it yet since I got to rip one apart to build two I am draggging my feet a little.

I also got a retail boxed PCI ATI radeon 7500 video card for the kids system since my APG AIW ATI 7500 seems to be doing the job ok. She don't really need capture on hers.

Canton the tbred .13u cores on the 1700+ and up are hitting the market. If the core is smaller it is the new tbred core and not the palamino :D If the chip markings are on a little black thing on the organic part of the chip its a tbred. If they are laser engraved into the core its a palamino. I would use the smaller core one myself... chances of a higher overclock :D
