multi os systems

Post by busheadfox »

Im runnung windows 2000 professional on my computer now. My daugther has some sims games that will only run with windows 98. I know I can install 2000 on a system that has win 98 and have both os systems on the same drive and boot up onto either one but can I install win 98 on a 2000 system and have the same options of bootup on either os system. I can remember in the past of windows not letting you go backwards to an older version of windows. Thanks

Microsoft designed 2K (and XP) to install in dual boot only if 2K or XP was installed AFTER the other OS. It's not really setup so you can install 98 as a dual boot AFTER Win2K is installed.

That said, however, yes it is possible to do it. It's tricky though. You have to install 98 in a different folder if it's going to be on the same partition (a different partition would be better, but not neccessary).

After you install 98 however, you will have lost the 2K bootstrap loader and it'll only boot into 98. You have to then boot from the 2K CD and do a repair which will restore the 2K bootstrap loader. After than you should have a dual boot menu when you boot up.

It's explained here: http://www.soton.ac.uk/~dg8/korean/dual ... al%20boot.

Look in the section called "Rectification of Dual Boot"

My GF has all of those The Sims this and taht games and they work fine under XP so you would think win2k would be the same. Tried to see if they have a patch for it?

I have to agree - any modern game will be certified for Win2K.

I just checked NTCompatible.com and ALL Sims games work under Win2K.

My daugther said the Sims game will run on win 2k but keeps shutting down at times and has all kinds of errors. Will run very stable on win 98 like it was designed to run in but not stable at all in win 2k. Does anyone know of a patch or fix to make it work correctly on win 2k.

Thanks
